February Birthstone - Amethyst

Amethyst is a variety of Quartz, ranging from pale lilac colours through to rich deep purple, it has been popular in jewellery since the times of ancient egyptians.

Amethyst can be found in Siberia, Sri Lanka and Brazil.

The word Amethyst is derived from the greek meaning not intoxicated or without drunkenness , it was believed by the ancient greeks and Romans that it would prevent the ill effects of alcohol. The Romans would go as far as to fashion drinking vessels out of and with Amethyst as they believed so strongly in its power.
