August Birthstone - Peridot...
Peridot, birthstone for August, was originally brought to European shores from St. John's Island, (now known as the Egyptian island of Zabargard), in the Red Sea by Crusaders in The Middle Ages. Early Christians considered it sacred and believed it gave success, peace and love.
They often referred to Peridot as "Chrysolite" during this period. Ancient Romans referred to it as "The Evening Emerald" because its green hue was especially vivid in lamplight making it perfect evening wear if green is your colour. This bright, vitreous gemstone is only ever found in shades of green; ranging from pale yellowish through to vibrant apple green. The colour is created by it's basic chemical composition, which is significantly Iron. Peridot has been used in jewellery for centuries and can be commonly found in Art Nouveau and Edwardian pieces.
